Mackintosh Outerwear Design Project | Edinburgh College Of Art, The University Of Edinburgh

Earlier this year, The British Fashion Council launched its Student Fabric Initiative. A collective community action developed to support fashion students across the country in the face of the pandemic while reducing waste across the industry.

Mackintosh and 24 prestigious brands joined together to donate materials, including deadstock and unwanted fabric, to fashion students at 33 colleges in need around the UK. The initiative is supported by Charlie Porter, with additional help from MATCHESFASHION, Fora & Cozette McCreery.

The BFC initiative mirrored our own program, which we have run with Edinburgh College of Art for the past five years. So we were very excited to see our small-scale project expand to cover so many more colleges across the UK.

Annually we invite the Edinburgh students to our factory in Cumbernauld to learn about our iconic fabric. And look at how they can recreate details and finishes that we use within the factory. Utilising what they have learned from our artisan's, the Students participate in a project to design a prototype coat for Mackintosh exploring the brand's heritage.

There isn't space in this post to showcase all of their excellent work. so we would like to use this opportunity to name-check some outstanding individuals, and share their profiles and encourage you to explore these fantastic young talents:
